Iskandar Johor Open

    Iskandar Johor Open is another series of Asian Tour golf tournament. It is supported and funded by the state government and also Iskandar Region Development Authority (IRDA).

    The first US$300,000 tournament was held in 2007 at Royal Johor Country Club, Johor Bahru. Artemio Murakami of mixed Japanese and Filipino parentage won the tournament and walk-away with the title. A total of 30 Malaysians – six amateurs and 24 professionals participated in the tournament.

    The prize money for the next championship held in 2008 increased to US$500,000 thus attracting more golfers that adds excitement to the event. This time around, the event attracted 116 members from Asian Tour, 8 other invited players as well as 30 Malaysian professional and amateur players making it a total of 156 players.

    Renowned players from Indonesia, Philippines, Japan, China, South Korea and Singapore flew to Royal Johor Country Club to play in the tournament. There were four rounds (72 holes) of stroke play before eliminating some players. Only 65 golfers make the cut. Finally, Retief Goosen from South Africa won the championship.

    The latest championship that was held last year, 2009 saw the prize money increased to US$1 million. The stroke play was held for four days and Korean KJ Choi won the tournament. Instead of collecting his prize money, he donated his winnings to six charity homes and bodies.
