The Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia will be running into its fifth edition in 2014. This is a golf tournament for ladies which are among the most prestigious events of the year held in the region. 2014 will surely be a more explosive and exciting tournament after the success of the fourth edition in 2013.
Last year, the Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia came with a total prize purse of US2million in which 72 professionals sweated out at the luxurious and posh Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club to take home a share of the prize money. 62 of them who participated were from the LPGA Tour while the rest were sponsor invite players.
That year saw the World No.1 Inbee Park returning to KLGCC to defend the title that she won a year earlier. However, that was not to be as 2013 produced a new champion when Lexi Thomson took home the winning prize with a four-stroke win over Feng Shan Shan of China. The American youngster set a new record for the tournament when she projected a 19-under par 265, the lowest winning score.
Dominated by Korean Ladies
The winner in the inaugural year of the Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia was Kang Jimin of Korea which was then won by Choi Na-Yeon in 2011 before Park In-Bee won a year later and the win by Thomson ended the Korean ladies 3-years domination of the tournament.
As the title sponsor, Sime Darby, one of the largest property groups in Malaysia had confirmed an extension of 3-years for the event which means that the Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia will be held at the KLGCC until 2016 at least after the success of the last few editions.
One of the most prominent golfers who have played at this luxurious tournament is American golfer Michelle Wie. She was involved in the 2013 that has since made 2 prior appearances in this event. Michelle created history when she became the first female medalist at the US Open qualifying tournament held in Hawaii at a tender age of 16 where enthusiasts can look forward to her participation again this year.
