The organisers of the upcoming Malaysian Amateur Open, MGA (Malaysian Golf Association) has announced that the host venue for the upcoming event is A’Famosa Golf Resort which will take place from May 19 to May 22, 2011. This would be the 109th edition of the golf tournament and being the oldest golf tournament, no other venue would be better than that of the historical city of Malacca.
The tournament will see participation from amateur golfers from all over the Asia-Pacific region while Malaysian golfers would also need to qualify through the competition channels where they need to be involved in the Malaysian Amateur close tournaments as well as the Sarawak Amateur Open and the Sabah Amateur Open respectively. According to Datuk Robin Loh, the president of MGA, the organisers are working towards having Malaysian champions in the men’s category as well as the Ladies’ Category which is a newly created one.
The Ladies’ category would only be going into its third edition after it was first created at the 2009 edition when it was held in Kelab Golf Sarawak then. The last Malaysian to have won the trophy was back in 1997 when R. Nachimuthu emerged champion at the Kelab Golf Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah. The other Malaysian to have come close was Mohd Illia Jamil, who finished second last year in Damai Laut Golf & Country Club.
The A’Famosa Golf Resort’s COO Julian Lau Joo Liang said that they are honoured to be involved with being the host of the event and has since started cleaning up and priming their golf course since late last year in order to be ready for the event.
