Iskandar Johor Open 2014

The Iskandar Johor Open is an annual golf tournament. Supported by the Johor State Government and the Iskandar Region Development Authority, it is one of the major golf tournaments in Malaysia and the surrounding region.

The Iskandar Johor Open was first played in 2007 where it was then held at the Royal Johor Country Club in Johor Bahru, the capital of the state. It is part of the Asian Tour which came with a US500,000 prize purse in 2008. The popularity of the tournament grew which saw the prize purse doubling up to US1million in 2009.

In 2010, the Iskandar Johor Open golf tournament’s prize purse reached US1.25million which was then the 8th richest event of the prestigious Asian Tour. Apart from that, the 2010’s edition of the Iskandar Johor Open was the joint-richest event with the Honda Indian Open which was solely sanctioned by the Asian Tour.

In 2011, the Johor Open achieved another milestone when it was added to the European Tour which unfortunately would be removed a year later. However, the prize purse for the 2011 event was increased to US2million which would remain for the following year as well.

Different champs from different countries

Sergio Garcia from Spain won the 2012 Iskandar Johor Open while Dutchman JoostLuiten took home the winning prize a year before. Other winners include Pádraig Harrington from Ireland, Artemio Murakami from the Philippines who won in 2010 and 2007 respectively. In 2009, South Korean K J Choi won the Johor Open with South African Retief Goosen winning the title a year earlier. Choi donated all of his winnings that year to 6 different charities in Johor.

One of the interesting factors about the Iskandar Johor Open is that it is the season-finale tournament which will determine the Order of Merit champion of the 2013 season. The event will be held at the Horizon Hills Golf & Country Club which comes with an 18-hole international championship golf course designed by Ross Watson, one of the most renowned golf course architects in the world today that spans out across 200 acres of land. This course was the ‘Most Memorable Golf Course for 2010’.
