It was heartbreak for Malaysian golfer Mohd Sukree Othman when he lost out to Gunn Charoenkul at the PGM-Asean PGA Melaka Championship late last month. The highly rated Thai golfer won the championship after closing 2-under 70 which would give him his second title this season.
The current No.1 of the Asean PGA Tour, Gunn took home the title to add to his Singha Esan Open which he won during the season-opening tournament. He posted a 7-under total of 281 and then raced to 3 shots clear of Iylia Jamil who managed to close with a 71 for second.
The competition was held at the Ayer Keroh Country Club in Melaka which saw the participation of fellow countrymen Mohd Sukree Othman and Nicholas Fung.
Sukree was the overnight co-leader with Gunn but he fell to a 4-over 76 and could only finish the tournament at the sixth spot with Nicholas. The latter was the co-winner of the PGM Melaka Classic in September 2013 together with Pipatpong Naewsuk from Thailand.
Gunn took home the winnings of US$9,031 which will put his total earnings this season to US$25,280 in the current Asean PGA Tour. He had led in the first round before pulling away with back-to-back birdies on the fifth and sixth holes before dropping a shot at the eighth. Despite that, he still managed to hold on the lead with 2 strokes. He would then continue to pick up another shot at the 10th before heading home in the final stretch. Next up will be the Singha Hua Hin Open at the Royal Hua Hin Golf Club in July.
