At 18, Malaysian amateur golfer Natasha Andrea Oon has been setting the United States Collegiate golf season ablaze. Currently, a student at the San Jose State University (SJSU) in California, Natasha was recently named 2019/2020 Mountain West Women’s Golfer of the Year. Prior to that, she was named the Freshman of the Year 2018/2019 for her exemplary achievements that year.

Exemplary performance all around

This is no easy feat especially for anyone venturing into a sport made so popular in the United States. It was Natasha’s achievements throughout the year that saw her make the title, more notably throughout September 2019 to March 2020. That was when she finished top 10 in 3 out of the 5 tournaments she participated in across the circuit. She was also part of the women’s team that won the silver medal at the Philippines SEA Games in December which surprised a lot of parties. It has to be stated that Gavin Green had a similar achievement when he won the Mountain West Men’s Golfer of the Year in 2013/2014 and 2014/2015.

Tournaments and events

As a golfer, Natasha has achieved incredible results in her run. She was part of the Women’s Golf Coaches Association (WCGA) Division 1 All-America team for 2 years running (although 2020’s season was dampened by the COVID-19 outbreak). Other achievements by Natasha include:

  • Finishing top at 2019 The Gold Rush
  • Second at the Silverado Showdown 2019
  • Second at the Mountain West Conference Championship
  • Winning the 2019 Malaysian Amateur Open (Ladies Division)
  • Second at the Selangor Amateur Open 2019
  • Second at the Santi Cup 2019 in Vietnam
  • Second at the 2019 Minnesota Open
