Red FM should not be confused the 988 FM although they belong to the same group. Red FM is in fact a branch of the former Rediffusion Malaysia brand which is currently owned and managed by the Star Radio Group, publisher of The Star, Malaysia’s leading English daily.
Red FM is one of the top English Language radio stations in Malaysia today where its “Today’s Best Music” appeals very well among its target audience which are primarily those in the urban and suburban areas. It started broadcasting in 2001 where Red FM plays mainly contemporary hits from the 80s and 90s all the way to current music and programmes.
As it is known, Red FM is part of the former cable-transmitted radio stations in Malaysia when Rediffusion Malaysia was still in use. Rediffusion will then go through several stages of rebranding after it was bought over by Arab-Malaysian Group before The Star took over in 2003. Red FM’s sister stations include 988 FM which is aired mainly in Mandarin.
In 2008, it was rebranded as Red 104.9 FM before it was changed again to RED FM which has become one of the top English Language stations in the country today. Among its most popular segments is the Red Breakfast WTF which comes on from 6.00am to 10.00am on weekdays. It was once hosted by JJ & Lil Kev before the latter left while its Red Rush which comes on from 5.00pm to 8.00pm are among the most listened programmes during the evening rush hour segment.
