KLfM is one of the very unique radio stations in Malaysia. Owned and operated by RTM (Radio Televisyen Malaysia), KLfm’s programmes are mainly heard by its listeners around the Klang Valley which means that its broadcast coverage will encapsulate most of Kuala Lumpur and Selangor as well as certain parts other bordering states.
This station is aired through the frequency of 97.2MHz. The station actually began broadcasting in 1973 when it was known as RMIK or Radio Malaysia Ibukota. Then, it only operated in 2 sessions which was between 6.30am to 9.00am and another between 4.00pm to 7.00pm. Targeting mainly those who are driving during the rush hours of the mornings and evenings who are stuck in traffic jam, the station appealed very well then, bringing them the latest updates, news and entertainment.
Coupled with the upbeat and contemporary tempo of its programmes, RMIK has a strong set of listeners, particularly among the city dwellers. In 1988, RMIK started broadcasting through 97.2MHz and was then known as Radio 3 Ibukota where it was instrumental in bridging the government and the people through several initiatives over the air. It would then change to Radio Kuala Lumpur in 1996 where it mainly target listeners between 15 and those in the 40s, playing Malay and English music.
KLfm got its name in 2005 where it continues to appeal to its unique set of listeners. It now plays music and entertainment throughout the day where its morning and evening segments continue to be among its most popular programmes.
